1976-77 UNLV Men's Basketball Team

The 1976-77 Runnin’ Rebels team finished with a 29-3 record and a third-place finish in the NCAA Championship at the Omni in Atlanta. The team lost in the Final Four to eventual champion, North Carolina, 84-83. This team was lead by Senior All-American Eddie Owens, who was the scoring leader for the Rebels averaging 21.8 points per game.

Senior captain Robert Smith led the nation in free throw percentage and senior Glen Gondrezick grabbed the most rebounds in a career. While “Sudden” Sam Smith made the most steals in a career. “Big” Lew Brown, Larry “Mighty Mo” Moffett and NBA All-Pro-to-be Reggie Theus rounded out the team. They were indeed the “Champions of the West.”
